Old Court House Museum
The Eva W. Davis Memorial
Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi
The Old Warren County Court House.
The old Court House is now a fine museum, with a wide collection of varied
items including china, weapons, Confederate Veterans' convention badges and
memorabilia, period costumes, furniture, etc.
One of the exibits comes from the home of Col. Andrew McCardle. He was a veteran
newspaper editor in Vicksburg from 1809 until military occupation. He served
on the staff of CSA General John C. Pemberton in 1863. He was twice arrested
for expressing his views against the Union government. Col. McCardle died in 1893.
This fine parlor furniture is handcarved rosewood, and the fabric is believed
to be the original upholstery. It belonged to Andrew McCardle and was donated to
the museum by his children, Annie Fort McCardle, Battle McCardle, and Mary
McCardle Lawn.
The melodian was made before the War Between the States in Syracuse, New York, by
Zavier Spang. The music, "Jefferson Davis Grand March," was written in 1861 by
Wm. Herz, and published by John W. Snow in Mobile, Alabama.
